‘Despair and … hope’ at NIU service

Eric Mace (C), the father of slain Northern Illinois University student Ryanne Mace, listens to speakers during a memorial service at the Convocation Center on the NIU campus February 24, 2008 in DeKalb, Illinois. Six people were killed including the gunman and 16 others were wounded after University of Illinois graduate student Stephen Kazmierczak opened fire with a shotgun and three handguns inside a lecture hall on February 14. The outpouring of sympathy Northern Illinois University received after a deadly shooting should remind those struggling that they are bridges to each other, the school’s president said at a memorial service.
